Logs, exports and old object versions pile up long after anyone needs them, and you pay for every byte. Bucket lifecycle rules are now available on <a href="https://www.exoscale.com/object-storage/?utm_source=changelog.exoscale.com&utm_medium=changelog&utm_campaign=bucket-lifecycle&utm_content=bucket_lifecycle_changelog"target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simple Object Storage: describe once what to delete and when, and SOS applies it every day.

What you can do with it

Expire objects a set number of days after they are written, or on a fixed date, across a bucket or under a prefix such as
logs/

Prune old versions on versioned buckets, a set number of days after they are replaced, and remove leftover delete markers

Abort incomplete multipart uploads, whose parts never show up in a normal listing

Rules cover expiration only: transitions to another storage class are not supported yet.

Rules also apply to objects already in the bucket: anything past the limit is deleted at the next nightly evaluation.

Be careful when applying bucket lifecycle rules to a bucket used for backups. Backup tools such as Veeam manage their own retention, and bucket lifecycle rules might interfere with how these tools work.

Why it matters

Storage stops growing by default. Everything a rule removes is storage you no longer pay for, every month.

Retention becomes a policy, not a chore. “Delete after 90 days” lives in the bucket configuration, which also helps with GDPR data minimization.

Nothing to operate. SOS runs the rules itself: no cron job, no clean-up script to maintain.

<a href="https://community.exoscale.com/product/storage/object-storage/how-to/bucketlifecycle/"target="_blank" rel="noopener">Get started with the bucket lifecycle documentation.

Archival Storage: Cold Data at 77% Below Standard Pricing

Cold data shouldn't cost the same as hot data. Archival Storage stores cold data on Simple Object Storage (SOS) at €0.0042 per GB per month, 77% below Standard pricing, with free retrieval, on the same S3-compatible infrastructure you already use. It is built for genuine archival workloads: cold archives, long-term backups, and retention data you rarely access.

How it works

Request activation through the activation form, one request per bucket, reviewed case by case

Once approved, your usage is billed at the Standard rate, then the difference down to the Archival rate is credited as a discount in the following billing period

Same buckets, same API, same European zone, nothing changes for your applications

Sizing: each bucket is billed for at least 10 TB. A bucket on Archival Storage is billed for a minimum of 10 TB per month, metered as 9,313 GiB since Object Storage bills in GiB, even if it holds less. That is €42 per month, against €184 for the same 10 TB on Standard. Archival becomes cheaper than Standard from roughly 2.3 TB in a bucket, so it fits large, genuinely cold datasets rather than small ones. Estimate yours in the storage calculator.

Key conditions

At least 10 TB billed per bucket, whatever the bucket actually holds

No object lock or retention on enrolled buckets: both arrive with the Cold Storage Class

When the Warm and Cold Storage Classes launch in early 2027, a 30-day window is open to move each bucket to the Class of your choice. Cold Storage keeps the same €0.0042 per GB per month, without the 10 TB minimum. Buckets not migrated within the window return to Standard pricing

Timeline Overview

If you keep large, rarely-accessed datasets on Standard storage, Archival pricing can substantially lower their cost. See the full details on the Storage Classes page, request activation for your buckets, or estimate your savings with the storage calculator.

Anonymization of custom Object Storage ACLs

Starting October first, it will be possible to set ACLs giving grants to other Exoscale organizations only by using their opaque UUIDs. The same UUID will be returned in all response listing grants.

The change is in line with the latest AWS S3 API behaviour, and will ensure full anonymity across the platform when using ACLs.

New Pricing Structure.

Our Object Storage (SOS) starts with a redesigned interface and a new pricing structure into the new year.

Redesigned Interface

The redesigned interface in the Portal allows a smoother experience, improved ACL management, and shows the bucket size now at first glance.

New Pricing Structure starting with May 1st, 2024

We are happy to introduce a new pricing structure that takes the growing sizes of storage into account. With introducing three new pricing tiers customers benefit from up to 50 % lower prices for large volume hosting on our object storage.

New Object Storage Pricing Tiers:

Tier 1 (up to 512 TiB): EUR/CHF/USD 0.00002750

Tier 2 (512 TiB to 1 PiB): EUR/CHF/USD 0.00001875

Tier 3 (above 1 PiB): EUR/CHF/USD 0.00001389

Note: Pricing of the tiers is cumulative. The first 512 TiB are charged at Tier 1 level, 512 TiB to 1 PiB is charged at Tier 2 level, everything above at Tier 3 level.

Additionally, we will introduce a minimum billable size of 128 KiB for objects. Objects below 128 KiB will be charged for 128 KiB.

Upcoming Developments

We are already working on the next developments to our SOS for example adding versioning in the Portal.

Encryption at Rest (SSE-C) is now available for our Object Storage. By supporting the S3 SSE-C extension, we are going the next step to help you secure your data. Up until now, all data transiting from and to our storage benefited from encryption in transit already. Server Side Encryption adds full protection to data while maintaining the data owner's control over it.

With SSE-C a "Customer" key must be referenced when uploading and retrieving data. This ensures, that data is encrypted at rest and unreadable without the key. Find more details in our storage documentation.

The feature is available via API and compatible with many S3 libraries and tools.

We are now supporting bucket versioning. Preserve, retrieve and restore previous versions of objects stored in SOS/S3 buckets easily. Read more about the features in the documentation.

The feature is usable via API and portal support will be added at a later stage.

In order to make our Object Storage API as close as possible with AWS S3 one, we will soon modify the create-bucket command behavior.

In 7 days we will deploy a new version of create-bucket that will return the BucketAlreadyOwnedByYou error when you call it on a bucket that already belongs to your organization.

If you have any custom API client relying on the absence of the error please update it as soon as possible.
